Any savvy shopper knows to get healthy products you must look at labels.

Did you realise that getting food for your dog is the same?

We all want the best for our best friends, but getting the best feels like you need a degree in quantum physics.

But what exactly do you look at on a label to see if your dog’s food is good for them or not? Don’t worry, we’re going to walk through it all with you.

Step 1: Watch out for Buzzwords!

1. Dinner

We all want what is best for our pups and what sounds better than a dinner? We love dinners as people and wouldn’t you want your best friend to have a lovely lamb dinner?

But did you know that the term “dinner” on a label means that the named ingredient may only by 25% of the product?

So, that lamb dinner you bought for your prized Pekingese is likely much less lamb than the bag next to it that says Lamb Dog Food.

And if that dinner happens to be a combination, say Lamb and Chicken Dinner, that means that the 25% of the product is Lamb or Chicken combined.

2. With

We love add ons, don’t we? Turkey dinner with the fixins’. Mashed potatoes with gravy. What could be better?

But that “with” on your dog food packaging may not add the mouthwatering twist you were hoping for.

The term “with” on a label indicates that the named ingredient is 3% of the ingredients. That Beef Dinner with Cheese may sound appetizing, but it may not be what you are looking for.

3. Flavor

The word Flavor should already send chills up your spine. Companies have used the word flavor to hide a list of ingredients you likely would never buy.

Flavor on your dog food, whether beef, cheese, or any other ingredient, has no specified limit for ingredient listing. In fact, the only rule is that an animal specially trained to prefer that flavor can detect it.

There are more rules on how the word APPEARS on the label than there are on the ingredients. The flavor can also be added by more than the named ingredient. They can be by product or meal.

Step 2: The All-Important Ingredient List

Just like on human food, dog food ingredient lists are in order of weight. The first item on the list is ingredient present in the largest weight.

But not all weights are created equal.

The weights that determine the ranking in the ingredient list are determined as they are added into the product. So, if fresh meat is added to the product, then dried, the ingredient list is based on the original wet weight not the final dried weight.

So, though meat meal is seen as a lesser quality ingredient, it contains less moisture when added into a product formula. This would mean that equal weights of these ingredients at time of production would end up with higher animal protein from the meat meal.

Going only by the ingredient list may not give you the best view of quality of the product. But understanding the terms and doing a little research will help you decipher industry jargon.

Step 3: Meat vs Meat Meal, the great debate

We’ve all heard the talk about meat and meat meal. We all know that meat is greater than meat meal. There is no debate, right?

First let’s get into the reason behind meat meal.

When an animal is slaughtered and processed for meat, muscles will be harvested for the cuts we are used to seeing. Breasts, steaks, roasts, these all are harvested at this point.

But this leaves a large amount of meat left on the carcass.

The next step in the process is to expose the carcass to mechanical separation. This will strip even more meat from the bones.

Following this comes a process called rendering. Rendering is a process of grinding, pressing, and heating to remove fat and produce a shelf stable, protein rich by product referred to as meal.

Now that may not sound terribly appetizing to you and I, but meat meal is a highly nutritious by product that packs a lot of protein. By utilizing meat meal, not only do dog food companies have a shelf stable ingredient for their product, they can also increase the protein content of their food with less animal meat.

Some producers utilize meat meal for ease of storage, some use it to add more protein into their formula, and some even use it to keep added moisture out of their formula.

So, the next time you see meal as an ingredient don’t instinctively pass it over as a lower quality product. Take the time to compare ingredient lists and see what that meal is giving you.

Conclusion

So, just like with your own food, if you want what is best for your dog you need to know how to read the label.

Watch out for the industry buzzwords. Don’t be pulled in by the excitement of a dinner if you are looking for high lamb content.
